2026 GMC Sierra 1500 Cab and Bed Configurations
Cab and bed choice shapes the 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 more than almost any other ordering decision. The light-duty truck offers three cab styles (Regular Cab, Double Cab, Crew Cab) and three bed lengths (short bed at roughly 5 feet 10 inches, standard bed at roughly 6 feet 7 inches, and long bed at 8 feet), but the combinations available depend on which trim you choose. A buyer who needs 8-foot lumber in the bed has one path; a buyer who needs three rows of passenger comfort has another. Knowing which configurations exist before you start shopping saves time and avoids ordering surprises.
At Allen Tillery Buick GMC in Hot Springs, our inventory rotates through a wide mix of cab and bed combinations across the Sierra 1500 lineup, and our sales team has worked through these tradeoffs with truck buyers across the region. This page walks through every cab style, every bed length, which trims each pairing is available on, and how the choice affects payload, length, and turning radius. For a broader look at the lineup, see our 2026 Sierra 1500 trim levels comparison.

2026 Sierra 1500 Cab Styles Explained
GMC offers the 2026 Sierra 1500 in three cab configurations. Each one trades passenger space against bed length and overall truck footprint. Pick the cab first, because it gates which bed lengths you can choose and which trims you can order.
Regular Cab
The Regular Cab is the classic two-door work-truck shape. Seating is for three across a single front bench, with no second row. Overall length is 210.97 inches with the standard bed or 229.73 inches with the long bed, and the wheelbase comes in at 126.49 inches and 139.56 inches respectively. Width without mirrors measures 81.15 inches.
Regular Cab is offered only on the Sierra 1500 Pro trim. It can be ordered with either the standard bed or the long bed, and in either 2WD or 4WD. If the priority is bed length, weight capacity, and a tight turning circle, this is the cab to shop. It is the only Sierra 1500 configuration that gets the 8-foot long bed, and it earns the lineup's highest max payload at up to 2,230 lbs when properly equipped.
Double Cab
The Double Cab adds a smaller second row to a four-door body. Both the front and rear doors are full-size and hinge from the front (no rear-hinge access doors here, unlike older Extended Cab designs). Second-row legroom is 35.24 inches, which is enough for adults on shorter trips and well sized for kids on longer drives. Passenger capacity is six.
Double Cab is offered on the Pro, SLE, and Elevation trims. It comes with the standard bed only, in either 2WD or 4WD. Overall length is 231.94 inches with a 147.44-inch wheelbase, so it parks similarly to a Crew Cab short-bed yet keeps the standard 6-foot-7 bed. For buyers who need both occasional rear-seat passengers and a longer bed than the Crew Cab short box, Double Cab is the most useful body in the lineup.
Crew Cab
The Crew Cab is the four-door full-size body with a usable second row. Second-row legroom expands to 43.40 inches, which is more than most midsize sedans offer, and the Sierra 1500 Crew Cab earns best-in-class standard front head- and legroom per GMC. Seating is for six with the available 40/20/40 bench seat or five with bucket seats and a center console. Passenger capacity matches the Double Cab at six.
Crew Cab is available across every Sierra 1500 trim: Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate. It pairs with the short bed (about 5 feet 10 inches) or the standard bed (about 6 feet 7 inches), depending on the trim and drivetrain. With the short bed, Crew Cab overall length is 231.92 inches on a 147.44-inch wheelbase. With the standard bed, length grows to 242.45 inches on a 157.04-inch wheelbase. The longer wheelbase improves towing stability but tightens parking and increases the turning circle, which is worth noting if you regularly maneuver in cramped lots or driveways.
2026 Sierra 1500 Bed Lengths and Cargo Capacity
Three bed lengths are offered across the lineup. Each one has a defined use case, and cargo volume is the metric that separates them.
Short Bed (about 5 feet 10 inches)
The short bed is the most popular Sierra 1500 cargo box. Cargo volume is roughly 62.9 cubic feet, and the shorter wheelbase that comes with it makes the truck more maneuverable in parking lots and tight residential driveways. The short bed is available only with the Crew Cab. It pairs with the Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate trims (every trim that offers Crew Cab).
For most daily-driver and weekend-recreation buyers, the short bed is the right pick. It still handles bikes, ATVs, building materials cut to size, ladders laid diagonal, and the boating gear a lake trip generates. Where it falls short is when the cargo is longer than 6 feet and won't accept being angled (full sheets of drywall laid flat, for example, or 8-foot 2x4s without an overhang).
Standard Bed (about 6 feet 7 inches)
The standard bed adds about 9 inches of cargo length over the short bed and bumps total cargo volume to roughly 71.7 cubic feet. Bed width at the floor is 71.40 inches, and width between the wheelhousings is 50.63 inches. A 4-foot-by-8-foot sheet of plywood fits flat between the wheel wells when angled, or laid flat with the tailgate down.
The standard bed is available on:
- Regular Cab Pro (2WD or 4WD)
- Double Cab Pro, SLE, and Elevation (2WD or 4WD)
- Crew Cab Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, and Denali (4WD only; 2WD Crew Cab is short bed only)
- Crew Cab AT4 (4WD only, short or standard bed)
If you regularly haul long materials, hitch a fifth-wheel or gooseneck, or use the truck for actual work, the standard bed is usually the better tool than the short bed. Note that Crew Cab + standard bed grows the overall length to nearly 20 feet 3 inches, so confirm your driveway, garage depth, and worksite access before ordering.
Long Bed (8 feet)
The 8-foot long bed offers roughly 89.1 cubic feet of cargo volume and accepts full sheets of plywood or drywall laid flat without an overhang. It is the only bed that can do that. The long bed is available only on the Regular Cab Pro, in 2WD or 4WD.
Long-bed Pro buyers tend to be fleet operators, contractors, and farm or worksite owners who need the most cargo length and payload the Sierra 1500 lineup offers and don't need a back seat. For Arkansas oil-field crews, timber operations, or equipment haulers, this is the working configuration. Max payload reaches 2,230 lbs in this body, matching the standard-bed Regular Cab.
Cab and Bed Availability by Trim
This is the matrix most buyers want before they configure. Read each row as one trim and the bodies it can be ordered in.
Pro
The base Pro trim is the most flexible Sierra 1500 in the lineup when it comes to cab and bed. It is the only trim that offers all three cab styles:
- Regular Cab: standard bed or long bed, 2WD or 4WD
- Double Cab: standard bed, 2WD or 4WD
- Crew Cab: short bed (2WD or 4WD) or standard bed (4WD only)
Pro is also the only trim that gets the 8-foot long bed at all. If long-bed capacity matters, the Pro is the trim, and the Regular Cab is the cab.
SLE
SLE drops Regular Cab from the menu and keeps two body choices:
- Double Cab: standard bed, 2WD or 4WD
- Crew Cab: short bed (2WD or 4WD) or standard bed (4WD only)
For buyers who want a step up from the Pro work-truck spec but still need the lower price and the flexibility of either body, SLE is the practical pick.
Elevation
Elevation matches SLE on cab and bed availability:
- Double Cab: standard bed, 2WD or 4WD
- Crew Cab: short bed (2WD or 4WD) or standard bed (4WD only)
Elevation is the last trim in the lineup that offers Double Cab. Everything from SLT up is Crew Cab only.
SLT
SLT is Crew Cab only:
- Crew Cab: short bed (2WD or 4WD) or standard bed (4WD only)
SLT introduces 5.3L V8 standard equipment and chrome exterior treatment, and the configuration menu narrows to focus on the most popular cab body.
AT4
AT4 is Crew Cab and 4WD only, by design. The off-road suspension, 2-inch factory lift, Rancho monotube shocks, and skid plates are part of the trim definition.
- Crew Cab 4WD: short bed or standard bed
The standard bed pairing makes AT4 a real working off-road truck, not just a styling exercise. The short bed pairing makes it easier to maneuver on tight trails and in driveways. For 2026, AT4 comes standard with the Duramax 3.0L Turbo-Diesel. That is a change from prior model years, when the 5.3L V8 was standard.
AT4X
AT4X tightens the configuration menu further to a single body:
- Crew Cab 4WD: short bed only
The short-bed-only design is a function of the trim's deeper off-road hardware, including front and rear electronic locking differentials, Multimatic DSSV dampers, and the optional AEV Edition package, which adds AEV stamped-steel bumpers and front winch capability.
Denali
Denali matches SLT on body availability and adds luxury equipment on top:
- Crew Cab: short bed (2WD or 4WD) or standard bed (4WD only)
The 2WD short-bed configuration is a popular Denali order for buyers who want the luxury features without the off-road geometry of a 4WD long-wheelbase truck.
Denali Ultimate
Denali Ultimate is the lineup's top trim and the most restricted on body choice:
- Crew Cab 4WD: short bed only
The 4WD short-bed-only configuration reflects how this trim is positioned: a luxury truck with Super Cruise standard, a 6.2L V8 standard, and 16-way massaging seats, sized for a daily-driving urban-and-suburban use pattern rather than long-bed work-truck duty.
Cab and Bed Comparison Matrix
Side-by-side reference. Bed lengths and lengths are approximate to inches; configurations vary by trim and drivetrain.
- Regular Cab + Long Bed: Pro only. ~229.73" length, 139.56" wheelbase. 3-passenger. Up to 2,230 lbs payload. 89.1 cu ft cargo volume. 2WD or 4WD.
- Regular Cab + Standard Bed: Pro only. 210.97" length, 126.49" wheelbase. 3-passenger. Up to 2,230 lbs payload. 71.7 cu ft cargo volume. 2WD or 4WD.
- Double Cab + Standard Bed: Pro, SLE, Elevation. 231.94" length, 147.44" wheelbase. 6-passenger. Up to 2,040 lbs payload. 71.7 cu ft cargo volume. 2WD or 4WD.
- Crew Cab + Short Bed: Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, AT4X, Denali, Denali Ultimate. 231.92" length, 147.44" wheelbase. 6-passenger. Up to 2,020 lbs payload. 62.9 cu ft cargo volume. 2WD on most trims (Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, Denali); 4WD only on AT4, AT4X, and Denali Ultimate.
- Crew Cab + Standard Bed: Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, Denali. 242.45" length, 157.04" wheelbase. 6-passenger. Up to 1,950 lbs payload. 71.7 cu ft cargo volume. 4WD only.
Note that the maximum 13,300-lb towing capacity is achieved with the Double Cab 2WD + standard bed + available Duramax 3.0L Turbo-Diesel + available Max Trailering Package + 20" wheels and tires, properly equipped. Towing capacities vary by configuration; check the trim-specific specs before assuming any single number applies to your build.
Choosing the Right Cab and Bed for Your Use Case
The trim decision is mostly about equipment and price. The cab and bed decision is about how the truck fits your real life. Here is a framework that maps common buyer use cases to the best cab and bed pairings.
If You Primarily Tow a Boat, Camper, or Horse Trailer
Crew Cab + standard bed (4WD) gives you the longer wheelbase that improves trailer stability at highway speeds and the rear-seat space to bring family or crew. The standard bed also accepts a fifth-wheel hitch better than the short bed, which is relevant if you tow a fifth-wheel camper. For ProGrade Trailering, the SLT or Denali Crew Cab standard-bed build is a strong fit. If you tow heavy and rarely carry passengers, a Double Cab Pro or SLE with standard bed and the Duramax diesel can hit max towing of 13,300 lbs with proper equipment.
If You Primarily Use the Truck for Work and Hauling
Regular Cab + long bed Pro is the answer if cargo length matters most and passenger capacity is secondary. This is the only Sierra 1500 configuration that swallows 8-foot lumber and sheet goods without overhang. Max payload of 2,230 lbs handles tools, materials, equipment, or all three at once. If you need occasional rear-seat capacity, step up to Double Cab + standard bed Pro or SLE.
If You Daily-Drive and Family-Haul
Crew Cab + short bed is the most popular pick for a reason. The 43.40-inch second-row legroom is generous for car seats and adults. The shorter wheelbase compared to the standard-bed Crew Cab makes parking and turning easier without giving up cabin space. SLE, Elevation, SLT, Denali, and Denali Ultimate are all viable here, depending on equipment preference and budget.
If You Off-Road on Weekends
AT4 Crew Cab short bed is the most maneuverable AT4 build for trails. AT4 Crew Cab standard bed gives you more cargo space for gear at the cost of a longer wheelbase and a wider turning circle. AT4X is short bed only by design, since the trim is built for technical off-road capability with the standard cab footprint.
If You Want the Most Luxurious Sierra 1500 Possible
Denali Ultimate Crew Cab short bed 4WD is the only configuration this trim is offered in, and it is positioned as a luxury daily driver with full off-road traction. Denali Crew Cab short bed 2WD is a popular alternative for buyers who want the luxury appointments without 4WD.

2026 Sierra 1500 Cab and Bed Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Crew Cab and Double Cab on the 2026 Sierra 1500?
The Crew Cab and Double Cab both have four front-hinged doors and seat up to six. The biggest functional difference is rear-seat legroom: 43.40 inches in Crew Cab versus 35.24 inches in Double Cab. Crew Cab is comfortable for adults on long drives; Double Cab is comfortable for kids and works for adults on shorter trips. Crew Cab is available on every trim. Double Cab is available only on Pro, SLE, and Elevation.
Which 2026 Sierra 1500 trims come in Regular Cab?
Regular Cab is offered only on the Sierra 1500 Pro trim. It can be ordered with either the standard bed (~6 feet 7 inches) or the long bed (8 feet), and in 2WD or 4WD. It seats three across a single front bench. If you need the 8-foot long bed, Regular Cab Pro is the only Sierra 1500 configuration that offers it.
What bed lengths does the 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 offer?
Three bed lengths are available: short bed (about 5 feet 10 inches, roughly 62.9 cubic feet of cargo volume), standard bed (about 6 feet 7 inches, roughly 71.7 cubic feet), and long bed (8 feet, roughly 89.1 cubic feet). The short bed is Crew Cab only. The standard bed is offered on Regular Cab, Double Cab, and Crew Cab depending on trim and drivetrain. The long bed is Regular Cab Pro only.
What is the max payload of the 2026 Sierra 1500 by configuration?
Per GMC, max available payload by configuration is up to 2,230 lbs for standard bed Regular Cab, 2,230 lbs for long bed Regular Cab, 2,040 lbs for standard bed Double Cab, 2,020 lbs for short bed Crew Cab, and 1,950 lbs for standard bed Crew Cab. Payload varies by engine, drivetrain (2WD vs. 4WD), optional equipment, and whether the suspension is lifted, so build-specific payload is what you should rely on when ordering for a known load.
Can the 2026 Sierra 1500 Crew Cab be ordered in 2WD with the standard bed?
No. Crew Cab 2WD is available with the short bed only on the 2026 Sierra 1500. Crew Cab + standard bed is 4WD only. If you want a longer bed with 2WD, the Double Cab + standard bed (Pro, SLE, or Elevation) or Regular Cab + standard bed (Pro) are the available paths.
Will a 4x8 sheet of plywood fit in the Sierra 1500 bed?
Bed width between the wheelhousings is 50.63 inches, so a 4-foot-by-8-foot sheet of plywood will not lay flat between the wheel wells. It fits when angled across the bed or laid flat with the tailgate down. Bed width at the floor measures 71.40 inches, so wider items fit ahead of and behind the wheel wells. For full sheets laid flat without overhang, the 8-foot long bed (Regular Cab Pro only) is the configuration that handles them.
How do I decide between the short bed and standard bed on a Crew Cab Sierra 1500?
If most of your hauling is gear, ATVs, building materials cut to size, or weekend cargo that fits in roughly 6 feet, the short bed is easier to live with day-to-day: easier to park, tighter turning radius, shorter overall length. If you regularly haul long materials, tow a fifth-wheel, or use the bed for actual work loads, the standard bed gains you about 9 inches of cargo length and a longer wheelbase that helps trailer stability. The standard bed Crew Cab is 4WD only on every trim that offers it.
Is the long bed available on any Sierra 1500 trim other than Pro?
No. The 8-foot long bed is offered only on the Regular Cab Pro in 2026. SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate do not offer the long bed. If long-bed capacity is a requirement, the choice is Regular Cab Pro.
