2026 GMC Sierra 1500 Towing Capacity Guide

The 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 tows up to 13,300 lbs when properly equipped with a Double Cab 2WD standard bed, the available Duramax 3.0L Turbo-Diesel I6 engine, the available Max Trailering Package, and 20" wheels and tires. That headline number lands on one specific build sheet. Every other configuration tows less, and most Sierra buyers choose a Crew Cab with 4WD that comes in well under the maximum.

This guide breaks down what each engine and configuration can actually pull, what's inside the Max Trailering Package, and how trim choice affects the ceiling. Our 2026 Sierra 1500 trim-by-trim breakdown covers all eight trims in depth, and our guide to cab and bed pairings shows how those choices interact with towing.

2026 Sierra 1500 Towing in Hot Springs AR

Maximum Towing Capacity by Configuration

The four available engines on the 2026 Sierra 1500 produce four very different tow ratings. Pick the engine first, then narrow the cab and drivetrain.

  • 2.7L TurboMax I4 (310 hp, 430 lb-ft): up to 9,400 lbs properly equipped. Standard on Pro, SLE, and Elevation. 8-speed automatic.
  • 5.3L V8 (355 hp, 383 lb-ft): up to 11,200 lbs properly equipped. Available on Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, and Denali (standard on SLT and Denali). 10-speed automatic.
  • 6.2L V8 (420 hp, 460 lb-ft): up to 13,100 lbs properly equipped. Available on AT4, AT4X, and Denali; standard on Denali Ultimate. The peak gas rating.
  • 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel I6 (305 hp, 495 lb-ft): up to 13,300 lbs properly equipped, the lineup maximum. Standard on AT4 for 2026 (a change from the prior year, when the 5.3L V8 was standard). Available on SLE, Elevation, SLT, Denali, and Denali Ultimate.

The 13,300-lb maximum requires a Double Cab 2WD with the standard bed, the Duramax, the Max Trailering Package, and 20" wheels. Crew Cab 4WD with the diesel tops out lower. And because AT4, AT4X, and Denali Ultimate are 4WD-only, none of those trims can hit the absolute maximum, though each still pulls serious weight in its available builds.

Maximum Payload by Configuration

Towing capacity measures what the truck pulls behind it; payload measures what it carries inside the cab and bed. Maximum available payloads per GMC:

  • Regular Cab long bed: up to 2,230 lbs
  • Regular Cab standard bed: up to 2,230 lbs
  • Double Cab standard bed: up to 2,040 lbs
  • Crew Cab short bed: up to 2,020 lbs
  • Crew Cab standard bed: up to 1,950 lbs

Base payload shifts with engine, drivetrain, options, and whether the suspension is lifted. The factory 2" lift on AT4 and AT4X reduces payload relative to non-lifted trims. The yellow door-jamb sticker shows the exact payload for any specific truck.

Trailering Packages and Features

The 2026 Sierra 1500 offers two trailering packages.

The base Trailering Package (RPO Z82) includes a Class IV trailer hitch with 2.5" receiver, seven-pin and four-pin connectors, and an automatic locking rear differential. Adequate for trailers in the 5,000 to 7,000-lb range.

The available Max Trailering Package (RPO NHT) unlocks the higher tow ratings. Per GMC, it adds an integrated trailer brake controller, an enhanced cooling radiator, revised shock tuning, heavier-duty rear springs, an increased rear-axle gross weight rating, and a 220-amp alternator. It requires 18" or 20" wheels; the maximum 13,300-lb rating specifically requires the 20s. If you tow close to the truck's rating in summer heat, the upgraded cooling alone justifies the package.

Fifth-Wheel and Gooseneck Capability

The 2026 Sierra 1500 pulls fifth-wheel or gooseneck trailers up to 9,900 lbs when properly equipped, per GMC. The qualifying build is a Double Cab 2WD with the standard bed, the 5.3L V8, the Max Trailering Package, and a customer-installed fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch. The half-ton Sierra is rated for moderate fifth-wheel work; if you regularly haul a 12,000-lb-plus fifth-wheel, the Sierra 2500HD or 3500HD is the correct truck.

For conventional ball-mounted trailers, GMC recommends a weight-distributing hitch above 7,000 lbs. Tongue weight should sit at roughly 10 to 15 percent of loaded trailer weight, or 15 to 25 percent for gooseneck and fifth-wheel trailers.

Available Trailering Technology

The available ProGrade® Trailering System brings the supporting features together:

  • In-Vehicle Trailering App: runs through the 13.4" infotainment screen with custom trailer profiles, predeparture checklists, a trailer light test, Trailer Tire Pressure Monitoring, and theft alerts.
  • Up to 14 available camera views, including Transparent Trailer, bed-view, and hitch-view angles.
  • Hitch Guidance with Hitch View: centered guidelines so you back square to the coupler.
  • Trailer-capable Super Cruise®: hands-free driver assistance rated for use while towing on compatible roads. Standard on Denali Ultimate with a three-year OnStar® One plan; available on Denali.
  • Jack-Knife Alert and Trailer Length Indicator track the trailer relative to the truck and flag jack-knife conditions or unsafe lane changes.

If you regularly tow on I-30 toward Texarkana, the Denali Ultimate's hands-free trailering pays off on those long flat stretches.

Real-World Towing Around Hot Springs

The towing question for most Sierra buyers here isn't theoretical. It's tied to a specific lake, a specific trailer, and a specific season.

  • Bass boat or pontoon to Lake Catherine or DeGray Lake: 3,500 to 5,500 lbs loaded. The TurboMax with the base Trailering Package handles this comfortably.
  • Ski boat or 24-foot travel trailer to Lake Ouachita: 7,000 to 9,000 lbs pushes the TurboMax close to its rating. The 5.3L V8 with Max Trailering is the more comfortable spec, especially for the climb back up Highway 270.
  • Horse trailer to Oaklawn or a regional show: a two-horse bumper-pull with tack runs 6,000 to 8,000 lbs; a three-horse gooseneck pushes 10,000 to 12,000 lbs. The Duramax is hard to beat for sustained highway pulls.
  • Equipment trailer for work in the Ouachita National Forest: skid steers and small excavators on a deck-over trailer commonly land in the 10,000 to 13,000-lb range. The 6.2L V8 or Duramax with Max Trailering earn their keep here.
