2026 GMC Canyon vs Toyota Tacoma Hot Springs AR

The Canyon makes 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque on every trim it sells, and tows 7,700 lbs properly equipped. The Tacoma answers with a hybrid, a manual gearbox and eleven configurations. Here is the honest version.

The 2026 GMC Canyon puts 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque under the hood of every trim it builds, from the $38,900 Elevation to the AT4X, and GMC calls that best-in-class standard gas-engine torque for the segment. The 2026 Toyota Tacoma comes at the same buyer from a different direction: eleven configurations, two cab styles, two bed lengths, a hybrid, and a six-speed manual. This page compares them fairly, using figures pulled from each manufacturer today, and it tells you plainly where the Tacoma is the better truck.

We sell one of these two. Allen Tillery Buick GMC has been family-run since 1967, and we would rather you drove the Canyon and decided for yourself than took our word for it. Drivers come to us from Arkadelphia, Hope and Texarkana to do exactly that. Schedule a test drive and bring your trailer weight.

Quick take

For most mid-size truck buyers, the Canyon. It tows more, it makes more torque with its only engine than the Tacoma makes with its best gas engine, and it hands the base buyer an 11.3-inch screen and a factory lift that Toyota does not offer at any price.

Choose the Tacoma if you want a hybrid, a manual transmission, a two-door cab, a six-foot bed, or the segment's resale reputation. Those are real reasons and the Canyon has no answer to any of them.

2026 GMC Canyon Overview

Four trims: Elevation, AT4, Denali and AT4X, from $38,900 to $57,300 excluding destination. One engine, the 2.7L TurboMax turbocharged four-cylinder, making 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque with an 8-speed automatic on every one of them. One body: Crew Cab, short bed, five seats. Every Canyon leaves Wentzville, Missouri with a 2-inch factory lift and a widened track, an 11.3-inch touchscreen with Google built-in, an 11.0-inch digital driver display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the ProGrade Trailering System with an HD Rear Vision Camera and Hitch View. Properly equipped, the Elevation, AT4 and Denali tow 7,700 lbs. The AT4X tows 6,000 lbs.

2026 Toyota Tacoma Overview

The Tacoma is the best-selling mid-size truck in America and has been for two decades, and the 2026 model does nothing to squander that. Toyota offers it in eleven configurations across eight trims, from the SR at $32,445 to the TRD Pro, in a two-seat XtraCab with a six-foot bed or a five-seat Double Cab with a five- or six-foot bed. The i-FORCE 2.4-liter turbocharged four makes up to 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque, and the i-FORCE MAX hybrid version makes up to 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft. A six-speed intelligent manual transmission is available on select gas trims. Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard on every trim. Toyota does not publish a maximum towing figure or a maximum payload figure for the Tacoma anywhere on its model page. Independent specification sources put Tacoma payload at 1,710 pounds in its highest-payload cab and drivetrain configuration, and they rate its towing below the Canyon's. They do not agree with each other on the tow number, and none of them is Toyota, so this page prints none.

Read the top two rows together. The Canyon's single engine, standard on the cheapest truck on the lot, out-torques the strongest gas engine Toyota will sell you in a Tacoma. That is the whole argument for this truck, and it is why an Elevation pulling a trailer up Interstate 30 does not feel like an entry-level anything. Then read the bottom two rows, because the Tacoma is the more efficient truck at the base of the range and it offers cab and bed choices the Canyon simply does not.

Inside

Interior and Technology Comparison

The Canyon gives its base buyer the same screens as its most expensive one. An 11.3-inch touchscreen with Google built-in and an 11.0-inch digital driver information center are standard on the Elevation, the AT4, the Denali and the AT4X, with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto across the board. Push-button start, the HD Rear Vision Camera with Hitch View, the ProGrade Trailering System and the Off-Road Performance Display are standard on all four. HD Surround Vision is standard on Denali and AT4X, and the AT4X offers up to 10 camera views including front- and rear-facing underbody cameras.

Toyota's headline numbers are bigger and its availability is narrower. The Tacoma's 14-inch multimedia touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster are listed as available, not standard, and the entry SR runs a smaller display. Where Toyota clearly leads is in what it tells you: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 comes standard on every Tacoma trim and Toyota publishes what is in it, feature by feature. GMC groups the Canyon's driver-assistance content into two named packages and does not publish their contents for 2026. On a Canyon, read the window sticker. We will read it with you.

The money

Pricing and Value

These two manufacturers exclude different fees from their advertised prices, which is why cross-brand price comparisons on the internet are usually wrong. Here is the honest arithmetic, with both numbers on the same basis and each brand's fee named next to it.

2026 GMC Canyon Elevation2026 Toyota Tacoma SR
Starting price, before the manufacturer's fee$38,900$32,445
The manufacturer's fee$2,095 destination charge$1,745 Delivery, Processing and Handling

What the base truck includes2-in. factory lift, 11.3-in. touchscreen with Google built-in, 11.0-in. digital cluster, ProGrade TraileringToyota Safety Sense 3.0, tow hitch on XtraCab

The Tacoma starts lower, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What we will not do is print a single dollar figure for the gap, because Toyota's own footnote says its fee varies in Arkansas and the two fees are not the same kind of charge. Bring both window stickers to the desk and the comparison takes ninety seconds.

Our column

Where the 2026 GMC Canyon Wins

Torque, and it is not close. The Canyon's standard engine makes 430 lb-ft. Toyota states its i-FORCE gas engine makes up to 317 lb-ft. The Canyon's cheapest trim beats the Tacoma's strongest gas engine, and GMC calls that best-in-class standard gas-engine torque.

Towing, on three of four trims. Independent specification sources rate a properly equipped gas Toyota Tacoma at 6,500 lbs on the conventional hitch. On the same conventional hitch, a properly equipped Crew Cab Canyon Elevation, AT4 or Denali tows 7,700 lbs. Toyota does not publish a tow rating on its Tacoma model page, which is worth knowing before you trust a number you read somewhere.

Standard screens. The 11.3-inch touchscreen with Google built-in and the 11.0-inch digital driver display are standard on the base Canyon. Toyota lists its 14-inch screen and 12.3-inch cluster as available, and the entry SR gets neither.

A factory lift on every trim. Every Canyon, including the Elevation, ships with a 2-inch lift and a widened track. No Tacoma trim is offered with a factory lift as standard equipment across the lineup. On the gravel county roads out toward Arkadelphia, that is not a styling feature.

One engine, one story. The Canyon's cheapest trim and its most expensive trim share a powertrain. That means one maintenance schedule, one parts story and no engine regret. Toyota spreads three output levels and a hybrid across eleven configurations, and the trim you can afford is not the one with the good engine.

Off-road hardware from the factory. The Canyon AT4X carries Multimatic DSSV dampers and selectable front and rear electronic locking differentials, plus a 3-inch lift. That hardware exists in the Tacoma range only at TRD Pro and Trailhunter money.

Their column

Where the 2026 Toyota Tacoma Wins

It offers a hybrid, and the Canyon offers nothing. The i-FORCE MAX makes up to 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft, more of both than any Canyon. If you want an electrified mid-size truck, this comparison ends here and the Tacoma wins it outright.

Fuel economy and payload. The Tacoma SR is EPA-rated at 20 MPG city and 26 highway in rear-wheel drive. The Canyon Elevation manages 19 and 23. In its highest-payload cab and drivetrain configuration the Tacoma payload is 1,710 pounds. The Canyon Elevation 2WD payload is 1,670 pounds. Both are real, both are measurable, and the Tacoma has them.

Choice. Eleven configurations, eight trims, two cab styles, two bed lengths, and a six-speed manual transmission on select gas trims. The Canyon is one cab, one bed, four trims and one gearbox. If you want a two-door work truck with a six-foot bed, GMC does not build one.

Longer powertrain coverage and free maintenance. Toyota covers the Tacoma's powertrain for 6 years or 60,000 miles and includes two years of scheduled maintenance and roadside assistance. GMC covers the Canyon's powertrain for 5 years or 60,000 miles and covers one maintenance visit in the first year.

Toyota tells you what is in the safety suite. Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard on every Tacoma trim and Toyota publishes its contents. GMC names Canyon Pro Safety and Canyon Safety Plus and does not. That is a fair criticism of our truck and we are not going to bury it.

For the typical buyer in this market, the truck that tows a trailer out Highway 70 on Saturday and parks at a job site in Hope on Monday, the Canyon is the better answer. It makes 430 lb-ft where Toyota's best gas engine makes up to 317. The Canyon AT4 pulls 7,700 lbs properly equipped on the conventional hitch, comfortably clear of a properly equipped Tacoma on the same hitch. And it asks less of the base trim. If your requirement list has the word hybrid or the word manual on it, buy the Tacoma with our blessing. There is no version of this comparison where the Canyon wins that argument.

Canyon vs Tacoma FAQs

Does the 2026 GMC Canyon tow more than the Toyota Tacoma?

Yes. Properly equipped with the conventional hitch, a Crew Cab Canyon Elevation, AT4 or Denali tows up to 7,700 lbs. Toyota does not publish a tow rating for the Tacoma on its model page, and the independent sources that do rate it below the Canyon disagree with one another, so we print no Tacoma figure. Note that the Canyon AT4X tows 6,000 lbs, which is less than a well-equipped Tacoma, because its off-road hardware costs it hitch rating.

Is the Canyon or the Tacoma cheaper?

The Tacoma starts lower. The Canyon Elevation lists at $38,900 excluding GMC's $2,095 destination charge. The Tacoma SR lists at $32,445 excluding Toyota's $1,745 Delivery, Processing and Handling fee, and Toyota's own footnote states that fee varies in Arkansas. Because the two brands exclude different fees, we do not publish a single dollar figure for the gap. Ask us and we will price both on the same basis.

Does the GMC Canyon come as a hybrid?

No. Every 2026 Canyon uses the 2.7L TurboMax gas engine, 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, on every trim. There is no hybrid and no diesel. Toyota offers the i-FORCE MAX hybrid on the Tacoma, rated up to 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft. If a hybrid powertrain is a requirement, the Canyon cannot meet it.

Which truck has more standard technology?

The Canyon. An 11.3-inch touchscreen with Google built-in and an 11.0-inch digital driver display are standard on every Canyon trim, including the base Elevation, along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Toyota lists the Tacoma's 14-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital cluster as available rather than standard, and the entry SR runs a smaller screen.

Which is better for off-road driving?

It depends how far you go. Every Canyon trim leaves the factory with a 2-inch lift and a widened track, which no Tacoma trim can say. The Canyon AT4X adds a 3-inch lift, Multimatic DSSV dampers and front and rear electronic locking differentials. Toyota answers with more choices, including TRD Off-Road, Trailhunter and TRD Pro, and it offers a manual transmission the Canyon does not.

Drive the Canyon Before You Decide

Bring your trailer. Bring the Tacoma's window sticker. We will price them on the same basis and let the trucks argue.
